Muhlenbergia capillaris Ruby | Pink Muhly Grass
A spectacular ornamental grass that creates soft, airy clouds of pink flowers from late summer into autumn – perfect for naturalistic gardens, modern landscapes and striking mass plantings.
Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Ruby', commonly known as Pink Muhly Grass, is an exceptionally beautiful ornamental grass valued for its delicate texture and breathtaking late-season display.
During summer, plants form graceful clumps of narrow, fine blue-green foliage. From late summer, masses of incredibly delicate pink to rosy-pink flower panicles rise above the foliage, creating the appearance of a soft pink mist floating through the garden.
As autumn progresses, the foliage develops attractive warm copper tones, extending the ornamental season well beyond flowering.
Despite its delicate appearance, Muhlenbergia is a remarkably resilient plant. Once established, it tolerates heat and periods of drought and performs beautifully in sunny, well-drained locations.

Sowing
When to Sow
Seeds can be started in spring or, where conditions allow, in autumn.
For reliable establishment in colder climates, spring sowing under protection is recommended.
How to Sow
Fill trays or pots with a fine, well-drained seed-starting compost.
Sow the seeds thinly over the surface and gently press them into the growing medium.
Do not cover the seeds heavily, as light helps germination.
Keep the compost consistently moist but never waterlogged.
Maintain a temperature of approximately 15–20°C.
Under suitable conditions, germination generally takes around 2–4 weeks.
Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light and good air circulation.
Transplanting
When seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots and continue growing in a bright location.
Young plants can be planted outdoors once they are well established and the danger of severe frost has passed.
Choose a warm, sunny position where the low autumn light can illuminate the delicate flower panicles – this makes the characteristic pink cloud effect particularly spectacular.
Space plants approximately 60–90 cm apart.
Growing & Care
Muhlenbergia Ruby flowers best in full sun. Too much shade can result in weaker growth and fewer flower panicles.
Grow in well-drained soil. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant, although occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods will encourage healthy growth.
Avoid permanently wet or waterlogged conditions, particularly during winter.
In early spring, cut back the previous year's dry foliage before fresh growth begins. New foliage will emerge from the base as temperatures rise.
In colder climates, choose a warm, sheltered position and provide additional winter protection where necessary.
Garden Design
Few ornamental grasses create such a dramatic effect with such a delicate appearance.
Plant Muhlenbergia Ruby in groups or sweeping drifts to create spectacular clouds of pink across the garden. It is equally beautiful as an individual architectural plant among flowering perennials.
Its fine texture creates an attractive contrast with broad-leaved perennials and structured plants, while the airy flower panicles add movement to naturalistic planting schemes.
The flowers are especially beautiful when illuminated by low morning or evening sunlight, when the pink panicles appear almost translucent.
Perfect For
- Naturalistic gardens
- Contemporary garden designs
- Prairie-style planting
- Perennial borders
- Mass planting
- Gravel gardens
- Landscape planting
- Large containers
- Fresh floral arrangements
- Dried flower arrangements
Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Ruby' is an exceptional choice for creating movement, texture and unforgettable late-season colour. Its clouds of delicate pink flowers transform sunny borders and landscape plantings into an airy, almost dreamlike display.
