1. How to Wake Up Ranunculus Corms Before Planting

Ranunculus corms are small and dry, requiring pre-soaking and rehydration before planting to encourage successful sprouting.

Steps to Wake Up Ranunculus Corms:

  1. Soak the corms in water

    • Use lukewarm water (~20°C ).
    • Soak the corms for 3-4 hours to allow them to absorb moisture and plump up.
    • Optionally, add a rooting stimulant or fungicide to prevent fungal infections.
  2. Remove from water and dry slightly

    • Place the soaked corms on a paper towel for 30 minutes to avoid excessive moisture.
  3. Pre-sprouting (optional but recommended)

    • Place corms in a moist mix of peat moss, vermiculite, or sand in a container.
    • Store in a cool (10-15°C) and dark place for 5-7 days, checking for small root sprouts.

2. How to Properly Plant Ranunculus Elegance® 'Cioccolato'

Ranunculus can be planted in garden beds, pots, or greenhouses, depending on climate conditions.

Planting Time:

  • Outdoors in beds: April – May (after the last frost)
  • In greenhouses or containers: February – March for earlier blooms

Planting Steps:

  1. Choose the Right Location & Soil

    • Location: Full sun or partial shade, protected from strong winds.
    • Soil: Well-draining, rich in organic matter (mix in compost or well-rotted manure).
    • Important: Avoid heavy, clay soil, as it can cause corm rot.
  2. Planting Depth & Spacing

    • Plant 5-7 cm  deep.
    • Space 15-20 cm apart.
    • Position the corms with the claw-like “fingers” facing downward!
  3. Watering After Planting

    • Water lightly after planting to moisten the soil.
    • Avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
  4. Temperature & Sprouting

    • Ranunculus typically sprouts in 2-3 weeks if temperatures remain around 10-15°C .
    • Cold tolerance: Plants can survive light frosts (-2°C), but cover with frost cloth in colder conditions.

3. Care Tips for Healthy Growth and Prolonged Flowering

Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Increase watering in hot weather but allow the soil to slightly dry between watering sessions.

Fertilizing:

  • During early growth: Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to encourage foliage development.
  • When buds form: Switch to a phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to promote flowering.

Deadheading & Cut Flowers:

  • Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms.
  • For cut flowers: Harvest when blooms are partially open, and place in cool water for longer vase life.

After Blooming:

  • Once leaves start yellowing, gradually reduce watering.
  • Lifting corms (if needed):
    • Dig up corms after foliage dies back (late summer).
    • Dry for 5-7 days in a shaded area.
    • Store in a dry, cool place (5-10°C) until the next planting season.
