Amaranthus caudatus Coral Fountain

Amaranthus caudatus ‘Coral Fountain’ is a popular and versatile annual prized for its cascading coral-colored flower spikes. This hardy plant performs beautifully in garden borders, as a show-stopping cut flower, in containers, and even when dried—its vibrant hue remains unchanged for long periods. With little effort, it will flower as a compact plant just a few inches tall. However, when given rich soil and ample care, it can grow to impressive heights of three to four feet or more, producing large, drooping tassels that add dramatic texture to arrangements and garden displays.

Sowing Instructions:

  • Direct Sowing: Sow directly in prepared soil 1mm deep, after the last frost.
  • Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost if needed. Germinate at 22°C for 10–14 days.
  • Thinning and Spacing: Thin seedlings to 30cm apart once large enough. For mature outdoor plantings, space 100cm apart.
  • Protection: Use a cloche or tunnel if cold snaps are expected.

Growing Instructions:

  • Soil and Location: Prefers fertile, humus-rich soil in full sun and a sheltered spot.
  • Watering: Keep well-watered, particularly during dry spells.
  • Feeding: Apply regular feeding for robust growth.
  • Support: Stake or support heavily laden stems to maintain upright growth.

Cultivation Instructions:

  • Pinching and Pruning: Pinch out the center stem to promote side branching.
  • Cutting Back: After flowering, cut plants back and compost them.
  • Self-Seeding: Leave a few plants to set seed if you wish to let them reseed naturally.
